Movement and Rhythm Series | contemporary art reliefs | 2019
As a continuation of the Movement and Rhythm Series (2018), Bianca Severijns has created additional reliefs as part of her 16 pieces wall installation for her solo show at Gallery Periscope, Tel Aviv, presented at the beginning of October 2019.
Severijns is always looking at paper for new possibilities; these artworks result from spontaneous experimenting. The Movement and Rhythm Series consists of various contemporary art reliefs, all in the same format, formed through a layering, merging, and overlapping technique. She assembles hundreds of individually hand-torn pieces of paper and combines them into rhythmic compositions.
The intricate, organic repetition dominates Severijns’ contemporary art reliefs inspired by the Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven, who was a master of bare, minimalistic, timeless, abstract reliefs. “My mind gets captured by Schoonhoven when I miss Holland, and some of these works depict a clear visual affinity with his art and my birthplace.”
Severijns grew up next to the Waddenzee; her palette of primarily white, greys, and greyish blues appeal to the isolated natural worlds of this area. Within these “paper tiles,” she gives viewers an abstraction of nature and stimulates their imagination to find maybe waves of the sea or a breeze moving dune grass or layers of shells. Each image has movement and rhythm, seeking to inspire an emotional response from its viewer.
These contemporary art reliefs of the Movement and Rhythm Series 2019 will be on view at the solo exhibition, Gallery Periscope, Tel Aviv, from the 10th of October till the 15th of November 2019.
