“It is our humanity’s ultimate moral challenge – saving the planet.”
Jonathan Safran Foer
No country is immune to the encroaching climate crisis. Israel, the country I adopted as my home, has the misfortune of being located in a region experiencing desertification, erosion, pollution, and the consequences of heat waves over the Mediterranean Sea.
This body of work will dramatize the painful results of climate denial manifested by neglecting to actively change personal habits, ignoring the need to alter lifestyles that harm the environment, and underestimating the importance of making a collective effort to save our planet.
In the Earth Matter Series, I present two artworks titled “Desertification” and “Land-Erosion.”
“Land-Erosion” is created from sand-stones combined with textured details of my unique paper art technique. I gathered these broken stones from the eroded cliffs on the Poleg/Netanya beach after a devastating storm in 2018. The work abstracts the aftermath of lost pieces of land floating in a bleeding sea.
The second work, “Desertification,” confronts its viewers with dried parts of earth collected from the Negev Desert that gradually dissolve into pieces of black torn paper, symbolically no possibility of sustaining life.
The intention is to prompt people to take individual action to preserve and protect our natural world.
The artwork Land-Erosion of the Earth Matters Series has participated in the group exhibition “Tribute to Earth” at Artists’ House, Tel-Aviv, from 14th July till 15 August 2022. Curators: Ilana Lanner and Sari Paran.
