Uprooted Series | 2018
“My art encompasses sculptures, paintings, vessels that connect to the social and humanitarian theme, and are best known for their original intricate paper surfaces”
In her continuing of the Uprooted Series 2017 Severijns created two new artworks “Isolation” and “Order/Disorder” The artist seeks to explore the theme of displacement and how the stages of nature intertwined with the human conditions such as being uprooted, nesting, enmeshment, and revival. The works in the “Uprooted Series 2017 and 2018” deal with elements of tension, forced separation, isolation and order/disorder. These conditions are the key sources of inspiration for Severijns abstract paper compositions. Uprooting is a multi-layered cyclical sequence of destruction and regeneration, the paradox of stagnation and the opportunity for growth.
Severijns created and perfected an original artistic style in her beloved paper medium that is constructed by esthetically weaving, merging and layering hand-torn pieces. She feels a strong correlation between her work process and chosen theme: her hand-tearing technique of the paper leaves a ruggedness and raw edge which functions as a metaphor for being torn away from all ties and belongings. The color used is often monochromatic – free of any symbol, association or values, much the same as the uprooted feeling of no longer belonging to one’s native cultural and emotional soil. While the labor intensiveness overlaps, the time needed to re-root in one’s new soil.
These two pieces maintain a pure and hand-made feel that tell stories which carry imperfections symbolic of life itself.
In the artworks that are part of this Uprooted Series 2018, “Isolation” and “Order/Disorder”, the layered texture, created by wrinkled, woven and folded paper, along with the chosen color schemes aim to capture the global, regional and personal dimensions of uprooting.
