WINGS OF BEAUTY? | Di Carta 4th paper Biennial | 2019
Wings of Beauty? | contemporary paper art sculpture
Happy and honored to be invited to exhibit my art at the 4th Di Carta Paper Biennial in October 2019!
The Biennial this year is titled “Le cose non necessarie fanno bello il mondo” (Unnecessary things make the world beautiful) reflects on the nature of beauty and the role it plays in human life. It is a homage to Raul Meel (Italian artist-poet) to mark the inauguration of the Meel archive in Palazzo Fogazzaro in Schio and raises a challenging question: Is art still related to beauty?
“Wings of Beauty?” is the title of my triptych installation for this exhibition. Keeping in mind the well-known saying “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”, I deliberately used the word beauty followed by a question mark.
Inspired by Meel who was inspired by birds, I used detailed paper reliefs to create wing shapes that symbolize freedom and protection. The movements, patterns and textures of each paper wing is achieved by applying my unique technique of layering, merging, overlapping and assembling hundreds of individually hand-torn pieces of paper into a rhythmic abstract composition. The image created is an ode to the dazzling patterns of bird feathers and their symbolic values rather than a realistic visual representation of a bird wing.
As an artist, I believe that beauty radiates when the artist successfully communicates and conveys their intentions whether they are light or dark; kind or sinister; straightforward or obscure; pleasing or provocative; aesthetic or crude.
As a contemporary paper artist, I am loyal to expressing my thoughts, feelings and life experiences in this fascinating, beautiful and relatively young medium of modern art.
The triptych installation will be on view at the Palazzo Fogazzaro, Schio, Italy from the 5th of October 2019 till 9th of March 2020
